Australia’s national opera company was born when a band of idealists — butchers, pharmacists, newsagents — gave up their day jobs to celebrate the 1956 Mozart bicentenary with a season of four of his operas. Today, Opera Australia (OA) is Australia’s largest arts employer, with annual seasons showcasing the world’s great opera and music theatre repertoire, a touring program staging works in regional Australia, and with performance broadcasts in cinemas and on national television and radio.
Since 2002 Pinchgut has presented eighteen rarely performed operatic gems. Other companies do the more familiar operas excellently; we want to help audiences discover something new.
Our artistic and creative teams are driven by excellence, a desire to unearth these rarely performed operas and to present them for our beloved audience. We are proud to acknowledge that we achieve consistently excellent reviews. All our productions have been broadcast by ABC Classic FM and all but one recorded for CD – originally by ABC Classics but recently on our own label Pinchgut LIVE.
West Australia Opera

In 2017 West Australian Opera celebrates their 50th milestone in the home of opera, His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth with spectacular seasons of Puccini’s Tosca, Lehar’s The Merry Widow and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.
Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Foundation
The Foundation’s aim is to financially assist, nurture and support our next generation of young opera singers and to perpetuate the Sutherland/Bonynge legacy of excellence in the field of opera. The Foundation was established in 2010 having grown from the work of the Joan Sutherland Society which was established in 1978. Since that time over $300,000 has been award in the form of scholarships and grants for young singers, many of whom have gone to have international and national careers in opera. In 2016, among the year’s highlights, the Foundation will present the sixth annual Bel Canto Award for young singers on 3 September and the third annual Elizabeth Connell Prize for aspiring Dramatic Sopranos. We will also present concerts, masterclasses plus our annual fund raising Joan Sutherland Bel Canto Evening Dinner on 25 August at Le Montage in Lilyfield, Sydney. The final event for the year will be a concert to celebrate Dame Joan’s 90th Birthday on 6 November at 3pm in the Independent Theatre in North Sydney. We sincerely thank all our supporters and look forward to meeting you at one of this year’s events.
