Coronation of Poppea
No human nor divine heart shall defy Cupid
Celebrating 450 years since the birth of Monteverdi, Pinchgut Opera proudly presents one of the greatest operas of all time, Coronation of Poppea.
Coronation of Poppea charts the consuming erotic obsession of the Emperor Nero for the beautiful Poppea Sabina. Ruthlessly sweeping aside anyone who stands in the way of their union – including Nero’s wife Octavia and the poet and philosopher Seneca – Nero and Poppea triumph over all their opponents and rejoice in one of the most sensuous and exquisitely beautiful duets, “Pur ti miro”.
Composer: Claudio Monteverdi
Company: Pinchgut Opera
Conductor: Erin Helyard
Director: Mark Gaal
Bluebeard’s Castle with Bach and Brahms
Be Overwhelmed by the Depth and Power of Music
Experience the drama of Bluebeard’s Castle with two vocal masterpieces to get us prepared for this powerful and moving program.
Bluebeard’s Castle is a spectacular one-act opera, in which the fairy tale becomes a vivid Expressionist psychodrama, as Bluebeard and Judith (the latest wife) enact the timeless struggle between the desire for intimacy and the fear of revealing our secrets. It resonates with visual and musical symbolism – the terror and richness of Bluebeard’s domain, the opulent colours and the brilliant, blinding climax. Bartók opens doors to the soul, and David Robertson steps back in time to expand on the theme.
In one of Bach’s best-loved cantatas the soul makes peace with the world of suffering and embraces the hereafter. And Brahms’s beautiful Alto Rhapsody is the anguished prayer of a solitary, anguished heart.
JS BACH Cantata No.82 – Ich habe genug
